People often confuse rap with hip hop. Rap is an element of Hip Hop, but not Hip Hop itself. Hip Hop, as purists know, is composed of four primary elements: DJ Skills (Turntablism), Breakdance, MC skills (Rap), and the art of Graffiti. Other elements have been added over time to the culture of hip hop, including the “5th Element”, Skateboarding.
I think it’s good to categorize things. To be able to identify the elements that make up the whole. It’s important to have an analytical mind, after all.

Measure by the following standards: lyricism, delivery, impact, and content.
- Lyricism: The vocabulary of the rapper. His words. His use of poetic devices within his words.
- Delivery: The flocabulary of the rapper. How does he say what he says? Timbre, tone, and rhythm should be addressed in this category.
- Impact: The reach and engagement of the rapper. Does what he rap matter? How has it mattered?
- Content: The stuff the rapper raps about. What is the message itself? Why would the rapper rap on this subject?
