People often confuse rap with hip hop. Rap is an element of Hip Hop, but not Hip Hop itself. Hip Hop, as purists know, is composed of four primary elements: DJ Skills (Turntablism), Breakdance, MC skills (Rap), and the art of Graffiti. Other elements have been added over time to the culture of hip hop, including the “5th Element”, Skateboarding.

I think it’s good to categorize things. To be able to identify the elements that make up the whole. It’s important to have an analytical mind, after all.

Lyricism: The vocabulary of the rapper. His words. His use of poetic devices within his words.
Delivery: The flocabulary of the rapper. How does he say what he says? Timbre, tone, and rhythm should be addressed in this category.
Impact: The reach and engagement of the rapper. Does what he rap matter? How has it mattered?
Content: The stuff the rapper raps about. What is the message itself? Why would the rapper rap on this subject?
